Collision avoidance systems in light aviation - RSA's choice

The RSA (Réseau Sport de l'Air) brings together amateur builders, collectors and restorers of historic vintage aircraft.

This category of aircraft has a number of regulatory constraints in terms of on-board equipment: a VHF radio at 8.33 kHz pitch, which adds to budgets, and the looming obligation to equip machines with an anti-collision system. Today, there are a multitude of anti-collision systems available for general aviation. Their use has significantly reduced the number of collisions involving general aviation.

With this in mind, the RSA sought a low-cost anti-collision system for its members, capable of capturing as many installed systems as possible.

Jean-Louis Abou presented an overview of existing systems (TCAS, Mode-S, FLARM, ADS-B) and systems proposed by various equipment manufacturers (Air Avionix, U Avionix, FLARM, F.U.N.C.K.E. Avionix, LX Nav, Foreflight, FX PilotAware, Safesky,Flying Nerons). This equipment offers all or part of the functions required: detection, analysis, risk assessment and pilot alert.

In 2021, the RSA sectioned Flying Nerons' "Neurone" system, which ticks all the boxes: easy to implement, cost-effective, interoperable and portable.
