Overview of a space revolution

by Lionel Suchet, Managing Director, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales

Liftoff of the first flight VA262 FM1 Ariane 6 at Europe's spaceport, July 09, 2024.

Over the past few years, the space industry has undergone extremely rapid change. What can be likened to a veritable revolution concerns every aspect of the field, from science and manned exploration of the solar system to defense and commercial applications. These developments are not confined to the United States and a few iconic start-ups. It's a much more profound phenomenon affecting the entire planet: new application areas, new countries involved, new industrial players, new economic and strategic stakes... This is not, as some have presented it, a "Newspace" where a few private companies from the digital world would do faster and better overnight than the historic players in institutional space. On the contrary, it's a world where governments are fully aware of the colossal stakes of space for the future of our societies, and are therefore deploying all the means at their disposal to develop their capabilities in this field. It's also a world in which, paradoxically, an anarchic development of this activity could lead to space congestion, effectively prohibiting all space activities, even though our societies can no longer do without satellites.

Lionel Suchet invites us to take a "tour d'horizon of this space revolution" and try to imagine what might follow this extraordinary adventure.
