From AF 447 to MH 370, between the sky and the abyss,

Ile-de-France Group Conferences

THURSDAY MAY 13, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. by videophone.

The Groupement des Ingénieurs et Cadres Supérieurs de l'Aviation Civile (GIACRE), in partnership with the Ile-de-France Group of the Association Aéronautique et Astronautique de France (3AF) and ENAC Alumni, invites you to a conference entitled " DE l'AF 447 au MH 370, entre le ciel et les abysses ".

This conference is proposed by Jean-Paul Troadec , who was Director of the Bureau d'Enquête et d'Analyse BEA from 2009 to 2014. His talk will focus on the search for missing aircraft at sea in deep waters, in the light of the AF 447 and MH 379 cases.

The conference is free, open to all, and registration is MANDATORY in order to receive connection information and to inform you of any postponements or schedule changes.

See the GIACRE website for a more detailed description (click here).

Jean-Paul Troadec is a graduate of the École Polytechnique and the École Nationale de l'Aviation Civile (ENAC). He began his career in the certification office of the Air Transport Division (DTA), then was put in charge of the Airbus and CFM56 engine programs at the Civil Aviation Programs Division (DPAC). In 1985 he became head of the aeronautical training equipment department (SMFA), which later became the aeronautical training operations department (SEFA).

In 1993, he joined the French Air Navigation Service, first as head of the Air Traffic Control Department (SCTA), then as deputy to the Director of Air Navigation (DNA). From 1998 to 2002, he was in charge of the DGAC's strategic plan, before being appointed Head of the Human Resources Department (SRH).

In 2005, at the request of the French Minister of Transport, Jean-Paul Troadec left Civil Aviation to create the Établissement public de sécurité ferroviaire (EPSF), the national rail safety authority, whose principles are inspired by the tried and tested methods used in Civil Aviation.

Thanks to his extensive aeronautical experience, Jean-Paul Troadec was appointed Director of the BEA in October 2009, at a time when two investigations into major air disasters had been underway for less than six months: the crash of flight AF447 Rio de Janeiro-Paris, and the crash of the Yemenia Sanaa-Moroni flight.
Under his direction, several phases of the search for the wreckage of Rio de Janeiro-Paris will be carried out by the BEA, the first challenge being to estimate the area of the accident using calculations established by a college of academics, mathematicians, statisticians and specialists in marine currents. These first campaigns having failed, a new research campaign was launched on the basis of a new estimate based on statistical calculations (Bayesian inference). It was during this campaign that the wreck of the plane was discovered, lying at a depth of almost 4,000 m in an abyssal plain surrounded by relief. The recovery phase of the recorders and wreckage components, carried out rapidly after the discovery, enabled us to understand the circumstances of the accident and to draw up the final accident report.
It is because of this experience that Jean-Paul Troadec will be consulted by the Malaysian investigating authorities as part of the inquiry into the disappearance of flight MH370, which has still not been found.

Malaysia's Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke, announced on February 25 that the investigations led by marine exploration company Ocean Infinity had been resumed.
